چکیده

A new approach, utilizing an elevated pressure reactor and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), to the measurement of sticking coefficients of methane decomposition on Ru(0001) has been demonstrated. It has been shown that the detection, by Auger electron spectroscopy and photoelectron spectroscopy, of fractional monolayers of carbon on ruthenium is difficult because of the interference of the substrate signals. HREELS thus offers new opportunities to measure carbon buildup kinetics on ruthenium crystals. The measured initial sticking coefficient for methane decomposition on Ru(0001) varies from 1.7-12.7 X lo-’ in the 500-650 K temperature range. The apparent activation energy for methane dissociation is found to be 8.5 kcal/mol.

Methane activation on ruthenium: the nature of the surface intermediates

The identification of surface intermediates is an important step in determining the mechanism of a reaction and in developing an in-depth understanding of a catalytic process. In this work the surface species formed during methane decomposition on idealized single-crystal Ru catalysts (using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy, HREELS) are compared to the surface species identifie...

Characterization of C(2) (C(x)H(y)) intermediates from adsorption and decomposition of methane on supported metal catalysts by in situ INS vibrational spectroscopy.

Conversion of methane into higher hydrocarbons is a process of enormous technological importance, which would benefit from a better understanding of the nature of the surface intermediates formed during methane activation. Currently methane is converted into hydrocarbons mainly by an indirect route[1, 2] via syn gas[3] as the intermediate. Alternative routes, such as oxidative coupling of metha...

Microcanonical unimolecular rate theory at surfaces. III. Thermal dissociative chemisorption of methane on Pt(111) and detailed balance.

A local hot spot model of gas-surface reactivity is used to investigate the state-resolved dynamics of methane dissociative chemisorption on Pt(111) under thermal equilibrium conditions. Three Pt surface oscillators, and the molecular vibrations, rotations, and the translational energy directed along the surface normal are treated as active degrees of freedom in the 16-dimensional microcanonica...

N 2 dissociative adsorption on Ru „ 0001 ... : The role of energy loss

New molecular beam experiments on the dissociation probability S0 for N2 on Ru~0001! are presented. These are in general agreement with prior measurements and exhibit very unusual behavior; a very slow increase of S0 with incident kinetic energy E and the fact that S0 is still only ;10 at incident energies considerably above the barrier. A simple dynamical model is developed to describe this un...

We have investigated the activated adsorption of methane on Pt(1 1 1) by the combination of a supersonic molecular beam and in situ high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy at the German synchrotron radiation facility BESSY II. On exposing the surface to a methane beam with kinetic energies between 0.30 and 0.83 eV, CH3 is formed as a stable species at 120 K; upon heating, at around 260...
